Mojang Introduces the New Player Locator Bar

A few hours ago, Mojang revealed the New Player Locator Bar, a new UI addition for both Minecraft Bedrock and Java Edition. In this article, I will answer questions, explain its mechanics, and explore its uses. Let's get started!

What is the Player Locator Bar?

As we've seen, it's a bar at the bottom of the screen that replaces the experience bar. It displays squares indicating the direction of your teammates in a survival world. Each player is shown with a specific color, and their position updates based on your camera's orientation.

What Will Happen to the Experience Bar?

The experience bar will not be removed. Instead, it will now only appear when active, meaning it will only show up when collecting XP orbs. However, it's likely that this feature can be toggled in the settings.

What Settings Will Be Available?

Based on current information, this bar can be disabled by the server administrator, which makes sense since some servers rely on players not knowing each other's locations. Another expected option is the ability to disable it individually, allowing you to hide it from your own screen while still being visible to other players.

Mechanics

In addition to the locator bar, changes have been made to how players are detected. Now, if you drink an invisibility potion or wear a carved pumpkin, your location will no longer appear on the map or the locator bar.

What Can We Expect?

Now that this feature has been added, we can expect future updates to introduce ways to modify this bar using commands and potentially add our own custom points of interest either via commands or natively. Only time will tell!
